Veterinary Technician

Veterinary Technicians at The Stock Doc Veterinary Services work closely with veterinarians, reporting to them and the Practice Manager or Head Veterinary Technician. The role involves comprehensive support to enhance patient care quality and operational efficiency.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepare for office hours, stocking exam rooms and treatment areas
  • Provide pet restraint for examinations and treatments
  • Prepare and administer medications accurately
  • Facilitate smooth outpatient flow from admission to discharge
  • Assist in anesthetic administration and surgical preparations
  • Clean, pack, and autoclave surgical materials
  • Perform various medical and surgical procedures under veterinarians’ guidance
  • Conduct clinical laboratory procedures and maintain records
  • Handle radiographs and monitor vital signs for all patient species
  • Aid in patient restraint and treatment as required
  • Oversee patient cleanliness and comfort, ensuring a well-kept environment
  • Admit and discharge patients based on the veterinary team’s orders
  • Provided client education and answered questions on animal care
  • Conduct medical callbacks and recommend additional visits if necessary
  • Assist receptionists when needed and manage inventory of medical supplies
  • Work as a collaborative team member, ensuring timely attendance for morning treatments and rounds at 7:45

Controls Over Work:

Veterinarians outline tasks, quality expectations, and deadlines. For new or challenging animal care duties, they offer specific guidance. Veterinary Technicians use initiative for routine tasks but seek guidance for unfamiliar situations. Veterinarians ensure work accuracy and compliance with procedures.

Skill and Knowledge:

  • Proficiency in patient handling, treatment procedures, and lab test requests
  • Familiarity with veterinary instruments, their care, and storage
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques and standardized treatment procedures

Physical Effort:

  • Job involves bending, standing, walking, sitting, and handling tasks
  • Lift and handle animals up to 150 lbs safely, including horses and cattle

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to hazards from aggressive or infected animals, controlled substances, odors, noises, and potential bites or scratches
  • Possible exposure to contagious diseases

Veterinary Technician Assistant

Reports To: Practice Owner or Head Technician

The veterinary technician assistant is the primary support for veterinary technicians. They aid in restraining pets, cleaning rooms, and preparing for examinations. They play a crucial role in enhancing efficiency by handling routine tasks and allowing technicians to assist veterinarians during medical procedures.

Education And Licensure Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous on-the-job training is desirable but not required

Experience Requirements

  • Previous animal care background is desirable but not required

Personal Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Enjoys working with animals and can handle them even when stressed or in pain
  • Maintains composure and efficiency during medical crises
  • Exhibits mature and articulate communication in job duties
  • Embraces teamwork, collaborating effectively with all team members
  • Possesses excellent client communication skills
  • Physical Effort: Involves lifting, carrying, and restraining animals (assisted for animals over 40 lbs). Requires extended periods of standing, bending, or squatting
  • Working conditions: You may encounter unpleasant odors, noises, and animal waste—potential exposure to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases

  • Positions for and takes radiographs; understands IV pump usage
  • Admits and discharges patients per veterinarian’s orders
  • Performs additional assigned duties and assists in various areas
  • Reads and updates treatment information on the whiteboard
  • Handles billing for in-clinic or take-home items
  • Monitors patient status and intervenes appropriately
  • Demonstrates effective time management
